Story
"This is my childhood bike, it's seen better days, but i can't bear to part with it"
This. This is the work I like the most. An opportunity i accept immediately.
This is a Blue GT BMX. It had been sat outside for too long, the rain had rusted as much as it could. The sun had faded the tyres. It holds memories of countless afternoons shredding streets.
I started by taking the bike apart, stripping away old parts, and pulling it down to the bare frame. Everything, came apart, eventually. It was certainly a battle. Anything previously greased was degreased, anything covered in rust was stripped, brushed and sanded back to metal. The cranks, bars, pedals and wheels, all sanded, primed, painted, black.
The pedal axle had bent, slammed against something some time ago. I pulled out the axle, stripped out a spare from some stock parts, cleaned, regreased and rebuilt, spins smoothly.
I'd never ridden a BMX, let alone worked on a BMX. It was a bike in all aspects, but everything seemed to be different. BMXs use their own standards. More M6 bolts than i've ever seen. Gyro breaks, gusset star spangled caps, bulldog brakes. Same, but different. This was an adventure.
Finally it came to setting the brakes, an ordeal in itself. I first had to work out how the Gyro worked, how it went together, how it fitted to the frame, and then how to tune it. It's fun to ride, those bars spin. The GT finishing kit on this thing is thorough, stem, bars, cranks, seat tube protector, all marked GT. Polished or painted black. I cleaned up the wheels, I like that the red offset the blue frame.
I polished the frame, it looked great.
I delivered it and we took it for a spin. It was crashed on it's maiden voyage, over confident on a half pipe.
"I'm too old for this."
Description
The bike is in average, well ridden, rust speckled, fully functioning condition.
It has been refurbished, repainted, cleaned and rebuilt from the frame up. Utilising as many stock parts as possible. I polished them, cleaned them, painted them.
Consumables replaced, setup and tuned.
Rides smoothly over roads and kicks ass around a half-pipe.
The frame and components do show marks from where and dings, and that's why it's great.
This bike isn't for sale, it's now seeing a second life, shredding knees and kickin’ ass.
